A 1940’s Bungalow Kitchen Gets a 21st Century Rendition

Recent purchasers of this adorable Spanish mission style bungalow knew what they wanted – a better functioning kitchen that kept with the architecture of this unique house. Built in the 1940’s, the kitchen had received a DIY facelift from a previous owner that did not address any of the issues surrounding twenty-first century living in a WWII era design. Inset cabinets would fit the bill quite easily.

Getting Floored

Saltillo tile covers the floors throughout the house, including the kitchen. A desire to incorporate an underused mud room into the kitchen required some shopping luck, combined with clever inlays to eliminate the necessary wall while saving the existing flooring. This resulted in a workspace that is over 50% larger than the original.

That same Saltillo tile became the inspiration for the new room. Drawn to warm wood tones, the clients selected alder as the cabinetry material, finished with just a clear topcoat, allowing the natural appearance of the alder to shine through. Even though white kitchens are classic and popular (like this and this), from a designer’s standpoint, it’s nice to do something different once in awhile.

Back to the Future

Simplicity was the goal in door style selection. StarMark Cabinetry’s Gillette style, found uniquely in their Inset Cabinets Collection, was the way to go. With a flush door construction, inset cabinetry has a timeless effect that mixes seamlessly into this home’s spirit.

Being the current trend for countertops, quartz composite was the only option that interested the homeowners. Selecting the neutral Cambria Fairbourne finish allows for a variety of color accents that can be swapped out easily as trends change in the future, keeping this renovated kitchen current and architecturally appropriate for years to come.

Incorporation of lazy susan corners, a refrigerator alcove, a pull-out spice rack, display cabinetry, and deep drawers to store pots and pans makes this kitchen the user-friendly space desired by the clients to enhance their daily life.
