Mid-Century Modern Bathroom Remodel in Holmes Beach, FL
Nestled in the Westbay Point & Moorings condo community on Anna Maria Island, this two-bedroom waterfront condo had remained untouched since the early 1970s. The family cherished its history, but the bathrooms were overdue for a transformation. With just 5×8 feet of space in each room, our challenge was to modernize this part-time residence while honoring the Holmes Beach condo’s mid-century roots and make the most of every inch.
The Before
Design Goals: Modern Simplicity Meets Coastal Comfort
The original bathrooms featured bold wallpaper, fluorescent lighting, and outdated fixtures. The master bath had a short vanity with an asymmetrical countertop and a full-length mirror spanning both the vanity and toilet. The hall bath mirrored the layout but included a shower with an extra-tall curb and obscure glass doors.
Our client wanted:
- A clean, modern aesthetic with mid-century simplicity
- Improved lighting and functionality
- A shower seat and handheld showerhead in each bathroom
- A subtle white and pale gray palette to create warmth without clutter
- A design that made the small spaces feel larger
Innovative Solutions for Small Spaces
We faced several specific challenges that required creative design solutions. The condo’s location in a multi-story building meant we couldn’t relocate the drain for the master bath’s new shower. Our team expertly worked around this constraint, still managing to create a seamless transition. We also successfully decreased the height of the hall bathroom’s shower curb, improving both accessibility and aesthetics.
Selecting StarMark Cabinetry’s Tabor slab door in a white tinted varnish finish was the starting point. The countertops, shower sills, and shower seats were all crafted from Caesarstone Bianco Drift. This beautiful quartz provided a durable and elegant surface. A particularly innovative solution was the banjo arm countertop extending over the toilet tank. This unique piece, supported by discreet corbels, maximizes usable counter space in the small room while still being removable for easy access to the toilet tank.
To enhance the feeling of space, we used large 12×24-inch tiles on the shower walls, extending them to create a wainscot that wraps around the entire bathroom and even covers the floor. This continuous tile flow from the shower to the rest of the room creates a powerful illusion of a much larger, more open area.
Because of the limited space, a hinged shower door was not an option. We chose a semi-frameless, clear glass bi-pass door for each shower. This design maximizes the amount of visible glass, contributing to the open feel of the bathrooms. Each shower was also outfitted with a corner seat, a convenient niche for toiletries, a standard shower head, and a separate handheld shower head for added functionality.
Finally, we framed the new full-width mirrors to match the cabinetry, creating a cohesive look. The owners sourced three sleek pendant lights for each vanity, which are arranged in a row to provide excellent, modern illumination.
This Holmes Beach remodel proves that even compact bathrooms can feel spacious, functional, and beautiful. By blending mid-century charm with modern materials, we created a timeless update that honors the condo’s legacy while elevating everyday living.
