A Breath of Fresh Air: A Palmetto Waterfront Kitchen Remodel
Are you feeling cramped in a kitchen that should feel like a coastal paradise? Many homeowners in our beautiful Florida communities face this exact dilemma. Recently, a retired professional couple reached out to Duncan’s Creative Kitchens to transform their Palmetto waterfront home. Although they had lived in the house for several years, the kitchen never quite felt like theirs. It was time to put their personal stamp on the space and create a layout that actually worked for their lifestyle.
The Challenge: Overcoming a “Squished” and Confined Layout
Every kitchen has a “work triangle,” but in this original Palmetto kitchen, that triangle was broken. The refrigerator and range were positioned so closely together that they essentially eliminated any usable countertop workspace. This created a massive bottleneck in the most common prep area.
Furthermore, the room felt visually “halved” by a series of display shelves in the center of the kitchen run. This made an already confining space feel even smaller. Additionally, a cold air return necessitated an awkward desk area that the homeowners no longer wanted or used.
The Before
The couple’s first instinct was to remove the sink wall to open the kitchen to the living area. However, that wall was loadbearing and supported the second floor, so removing it proved impractical. Consequently, we had to think outside the box to find the square footage they craved.
The Solution: Expanding Horizons Without Moving Load-Bearing Walls
Luckily, we discovered a hidden opportunity at the far end of the kitchen. A disproportionately large laundry room with underused space sat adjacent to the cooking area. By moving the common wall back, we successfully increased the length of the kitchen by nearly four feet.
Instead of fighting the existing infrastructure, we encased the air handler into a sleek new closet. This allowed us to remove the unwanted desk and create a seamless flow. We then moved the refrigerator and pantries to the rear of the new space. As a result, the kitchen feels significantly larger and provides the open, airy atmosphere the homeowners desired.
Key design moves:
- Reclaimed almost 4 feet of kitchen length by shifting the laundry wall.
- Moved fridge and pantries to the rear to free the main prep area.
- Replaced center display shelves with continuous cabinetry and sightlines.
- Enclosed the air handler in a closet to eliminate the desk and reclaim usable space.
Modern Materials Meet Coastal Elegance
We selected materials that suit a waterfront home while keeping the look timeless. The cabinets are StarMark Inset, Maple Rocheport with matching drawer fronts and a Dove painted finish, which immediately brightened the entire room.
For the surfaces, we installed stunning Cambria Montgomery countertops. These quartz surfaces offer a subtle movement that mimics the nearby water. We paired these with a 2×8 green glass tile backsplash. To add a custom touch, we included a feature strip of small accent tiles specifically along the range wall.
Other key material choices included:
- Flooring: Modern 12×24 tile floors for a durable, clean look.
- Sink: A classic Kohler Whitehaven undermount, apron-front sink.
- Glass Accents: Unity pattern leaded glass door inserts from StarMark.
Functional Accessories for a Professional Finish
A beautiful kitchen must also be a functional one. Therefore, we packed this stressless remodel with organizational tools to make daily life easier.
Cabinet accessories and features:
- Deep drawers for pots and pans.
- Lazy Susans in corner cabinets.
- Pantries with roll-out trays for easy access.
- Crown molding and leaded glass door inserts (Unity pattern).
- A trash pull-out for tidy waste management.
Finally, we tied the look together with elegant crown molding that reaches the ceiling, adding height and grandeur to the space.
What the Homeowners Gained
The couple now enjoys a kitchen that feels open and purposeful. They have continuous prep space where none existed before. Also, the new layout improves traffic flow between the kitchen and living areas. The green glass backsplash adds a coastal nod that complements the waterfront setting. In short, the remodel respects the home’s bones while giving the owners a kitchen that reflects their style.
