Palmetto Home Office: Stylish Functionality for a Retired Couple
A retired, professional couple in the Palms of Manasota community of Palmetto, Florida, needed to upgrade their makeshift workspaces. They wanted a beautiful yet functional home office where both could continue their work. That’s exactly what we accomplished for them. With thoughtful design and warm finishes, their spare bedroom is now a beautiful, functional two-person home office that reflects their lifestyle and honors their beloved pets.
Designing for Comfort, Function, and Sentiment
The original office was a spare bedroom with two small desks and a file cabinet and lacked cohesion, let alone comfort. It simply didn’t serve the couple’s needs. This couple may be retired, but their workdays aren’t entirely behind them. Each maintains a light workflow, so the new office needed to support productivity without feeling sterile. They both required dedicated workstations with space for a computer tower, monitor, and ample room to spread documents out. A shared fax machine also lacked a home. Storage was another key concern; they wanted a space that felt organized, not chaotic. Most importantly, the couple had a unique request: they wanted a special place to display memorials and cherished keepsakes of their beloved pets.
The Before
The challenge was to create a dual-purpose space that was both highly functional for two people and deeply personal. We had to design an office that was efficient for daily workflow yet also warm and inviting.
The Home Office Design Solution
We completely transformed one wall of the room into a cohesive, T-shaped workspace. We crafted custom StarMark alder cabinetry in a warm, natural finish. To complement the existing beige tile floor, we chose a simple yet elegant beige quartz countertop. This combination created a neutral foundation that felt both grounded and sophisticated. The layout features two distinct, mirror-image workstations, positioned perpendicular to a central peninsula. This design provides ample elbow room for both partners while also keeping the shared fax machine and printer easily accessible. On either side of the center peninsula, we installed four drawers for files and supplies. This helps keep the workstations clear and organized.
To add hominess to the space, we used shaker-style doors with simple slab drawer fronts. The upper wall cabinets, which run from wall to wall, feature frosted glass inserts. This choice creates a softer, more residential feel compared to a standard, stark office look. A central open-shelf bookcase serves as the perfect spot for the couple’s treasured pet mementos, creating a personal touch that brings warmth and meaning to their space.
Finally, we added a pop of color by painting the walls a muted, medium-toned blue. This color choice creates a soothing atmosphere and a strong, beautiful contrast against the neutral cabinetry and countertops. The end result is a home office that is not only highly functional but also a true reflection of the homeowners’ personal style and cherished memories.
