Mid-Century Modern

When a client came to us with a vision for their riverfront condo in Palmetto, they knew exactly what they wanted: a unique and bold kitchen that honored mid-century style while incorporating modern functionality. The inspiration for the entire project began with a suite of vintage-inspired appliances that the client had already purchased.

The Buttercup Yellow Focal Point

The client’s choice of Buttercup Yellow Big Chill Appliances became the vibrant focal point. To make this creamy warmth truly pop, we selected two complementary gray tones from StarMark Cabinetry: Pearl for the upper cabinets and Peppercorn for the bases. This neutral backdrop created the perfect canvas, allowing the appliances to shine. Finding a countertop to tie these distinct elements together was the biggest challenge. After exploring many options, we found the perfect solution in Super White quartzite, which provided a cohesive space without competing with the vibrant yellow appliances.

From Compact to Open Concept

An Open Kitchen

The original condo kitchen was compact and closed off, following a traditional mid-century layout. To dramatically transform the space, we eliminated the breakfast area, a small pantry, and a coat closet. This allowed us to create an open floorplan that completely defies the old-fashioned norm of isolating kitchens. The client wanted everyone to see her new appliances, and our new design made that possible by blending the kitchen seamlessly with the rest of the living area. To make up for the lost storage, we added clever accessories behind every cabinet door, ensuring every item is at her fingertips.

Blending Retro Style with Modern Technology

Modern Meets Retro

The project required a creative solution for the cooking appliance. Since Big Chill does not manufacture electric ranges, we paired a separate retro oven in buttery yellow with a modern induction cooktop. Although a vent hood was not a building code requirement, the client opted for an aesthetic solution. In place of a bulky hood, we installed a large section of yellow glass block on the longest wall, adding another touch of retro flair. The final result is a custom kitchen remodel that reflects the client’s personality, proving that a unique and bold design is always the best choice.
