Kitchen Remodel in a Longboat Key Cottage

Nestled in the heart of Longboat Key, this charming 1940s cottage has been a beloved fixture in one family for decades. Now the sole owners, our clients decided it was time to update the entire home, starting with a complete Longboat Key cottage kitchen remodel. They wanted a clean, bright space that honored the home’s vintage roots while delivering the modern efficiency required for island living.

Redefining the Cottage Footprint

A Layout Change Opened Up the Kitchen

Kitchens in historic homes are often cozy, but this redesign required a strategic approach to maximize functionality. We collaborated with the clients, who expertly handled the general renovation themselves, to transform the layout. Because the original kitchen felt cramped, we initiated significant structural changes. We successfully opened one load-bearing wall to enhance the flow, closed a redundant doorway, and raised the ceiling to create an immediate feeling of spaciousness. Consequently, the new kitchen feels airy and seamlessly connected to the rest of the home. This true cottage kitchen is compact, yet thoughtfully designed and full of high-end features.

White Cabinets with Vintage Character

Selecting the right materials was crucial to maintaining that sought-after cottage aesthetic. We chose StarMark Cabinetry with the classic Maple Stratford doorstyle. Furthermore, to achieve a truly vintage look, the cabinetry was finished with a White paint and StarMark’s Cottage specialty finish. This unique treatment includes a subtle chocolate brown glaze, intentional rub-thru distressing, and light chain distressing, adding character and depth to the bright white base.

Cambria Quartz Countertops

The high-end finishes continued with the countertops. We selected Cambria Dovedale quartz, which provides a durable, low-maintenance surface with soft, flowing texture. Likewise, the backsplash features classic white subway tile, perfectly framing a stylish ½-inch glass mosaic tile accent. This thoughtful layering of textures delivers visual interest without overwhelming the small space.

Smart Design and Storage Solutions

Cabinet Storage Solutions

A compact kitchen must work hard, and this design utilizes every available inch. We incorporated several smart storage solutions to eliminate clutter and improve accessibility. These features include a corner Lazy Susan, deep Roll Out Trays for easier access to pots and appliances, and a dedicated Trash Pull Out system concealed neatly behind a cabinet door. Ultimately, combining beautiful materials with highly functional accessories ensures this kitchen is as enjoyable to work in as it is beautiful to look at.
